Solaroase
Mobile Architecture with Integrated Solar Power System
Architectural elegance and ecological responsibility
A mobile wooden structure powered by organic photovoltaics – a blooming oasis of energy designed for BKW.
The “Solaroase” is a unique expression of mobile architecture, merging design, technology and sustainability into one coherent concept. Developed for BKW and first showcased at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Davos, the installation will be used at future BKW events across Switzerland.
Nine large OPV elements made of polycarbonate – each around two by four meters – form the distinctive “petals” of the structure. The organic photovoltaic modules feature a custom design inspired by the pattern of “giraffe fur”, maximizing surface utilization while creating a captivating interplay of light and transparency.
These OPV wings are embedded in a sophisticated timber framework made of eight three-dimensionally curved laminated beams, unfolding upwards like a giant flower. The construction combines precision engineering with organic form – a perfect fusion of technology and nature.
Sustainability was a guiding principle throughout the project. All materials were chosen to be recyclable or – as in the case of the seating elements – made from recycled materials. The “Solaroase” thus embodies both ecological responsibility and architectural lightness.
Designed for mobility, the entire structure can be assembled or dismantled within hours. An integrated energy storage system powers lighting and wireless charging – fueled entirely by solar energy.
